The Peking Opera

We went to the traditional Chinese Opera . Its tradition dates from 1790 when it was played at the Qing Court. It is a kixture of singing (in a very high pitched voice), acting, dancing, acrobatics and juggling. The stories are based on Chinese folklore. Originally, the operas would go on for hours ar even days. Now, in order to satisfy modern timings and tourism, excerpts are played.

Our seats were in the front of the theatre and includind food and drinkas we watched. We were also supposed to cheer! Before the opera began we were able to go into an ante-room to see the actors put on ther make up.

Firstly, the orchestra of traditional instruments played for about 10 minutes. They were brilliant. They then played from the side of the stage for the whole performance ... from memory! The whole show lasted about an hour, with two excerpts being perfromed. We thoroughly enoyed it.
