The Tianamen Gate gargoyle. These lion-like creatures guard all major doorways in Beijing - and probably in China. This one has one leg on a globe of the world. It is a male lion and signifies power.

This is the first large courtyard after the Tiamnamen gate and we are now looking at the entrance gate to the Forbidden City. There were large crowds at this point.
