This, I think, is the Gate of Heavenly Peace. The Palace is so large that a permanent restoration squad moves around repairing and repainting it. It is estimated that it takes about 10 years to do a full renovation.
The Palace was off limits to commoners for about 500 years. It was home to the Emperors of China in both theMing and Qing dynasties. It is now known as the Palace Museum and visitors are welcomed.
It is constructed on a site dated to Kublai Khan and the Mongol Yuan dynasty. It was established in its basic shape from about 1420 by the Ming Emperor Yongle. Most of the present buildings are post 1800.
