Cleopatra's Needle

On the Embankment, opposite the Royal Festival Hall. This was first erected in Heliopolis in about 1500 BC and so is older than London itself. Its inscriptions celebrate the deeds of the Pharaohs of ancient Egypt. It was presented to Britain in 1819 and was put in plac eon the Embankment in 1898. In its base is a Victorian time capsule of artefacts of the day such as newspapers, train timetables and photos of contemporary beauties.
