Monkstown Rowing Club Christmas Day swim

The temperature was in single figures, but that doesn't stop some hardy lads from taking a dip. In times past, Magz used to do the jump. She's getting more sense nowadays .....

Turkey alternatives ...

We had the kangaroo and ostrich for dinner tonight - both very tasty. Lovely, lean meat -probably even good for you! The venison will come tomorrow.

Newgrange, Co. Meath, Ireland

The Megalithic Passage Tomb at Newgrange was built about 3200 BC, about 500 years before the great pyramid at Giza and 1,000 years before Stonehenge in England. The kidney shaped mound covers an area of over one acre and is surrounded by 97 kerbstones, some of which are richly decorated with megalithic art. The 19 metre long inner passage leads to a cruciform chamber with a corbelled roof. It is estimated that the construction of the Passage Tomb at Newgrange would have taken a work force of 300 at least 20 years.

The passage and chamber of Newgrange are illuminated by the winter solstice sunrise. A shaft of sunlight shines through the roof box over the entrance and penetrates the passage to light up the chamber. The dramatic event lasts for 17 minutes at dawn from the 19th to the 23rd of December.

Mid-winter solstice

We have arrived at my most favourite day - the mid winter-solstice. Its all down hill to summer now ...! The mid-winter sun had a clear start on December 21st over Newgrange. Have a look at www.newgrange.com to see footage of the live webcam from the passage tomb.

Kennedy Plays Cork

Well! We did it. The concert was a HUUUUGE success. The packed audience gave a mini standing ovation after the first mvt of the Bach Double - the first piece on the programme .... and Kennedy got even better with each piece. He gave an amazing performance of all three concertos and then did a fantastic Czardas with all sorts of themes thrown in as he played along. He is a hugely versatile musician. His facility knows no bounds and his Guarneri sounded like a dream. He played Jaz in the Kingsley until 5.00 am ... we didn't last quite that long! G and I stayed in the Kingsley overnigt ... luckily, because a huge storm blew in from the Atlantic.
